It’s a land where active volcanoes steam against blue skies, where wild dolphins leap in open seas, and where the gods of Japanese mythology are said to have first descended to earth. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most extraordinary places on the planet.

Day 1 · Into the Fire
Your adventure begins in Fukuoka — but not before a bowl of the city’s legendary Hakata tonkotsu ramen. Rich, creamy, and utterly addictive, it’s the perfect fuel for the journey ahead.
Then it’s south to Mount Aso, home to one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas. As your car climbs into the highlands, the landscape transforms — urban sprawl gives way to rolling grasslands that seem to stretch to infinity. This is Kusasenri, a vast meadow at the foot of the volcano where horses graze and the air carries a faint trace of sulfur.
For those who want the full experience, a helicopter ride over the active crater is available. Hovering above the steaming, turquoise-tinted crater lake, you’ll understand why the ancient Japanese believed volcanoes were the breath of sleeping gods.

Day 2 · Dance of the Dolphins
The Amakusa Sea, off the western coast of Kumamoto, is home to a resident population of wild Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins. Today, you’ll board a small boat and head out to find them.
There’s something deeply moving about watching dolphins in the wild — no tanks, no performances, just pure, joyful freedom. They surface alongside the boat, arc through the air, and disappear again into the deep blue. Children shriek with delight. Adults find themselves grinning like children.
After the cruise, the day continues with visits to Sogetsu Shrine, perched on a cliff with sweeping ocean views, and the historic port of Misumi. The afternoon’s hidden gem is Nagabetagaibed Road — a coastal path that vanishes beneath the tide and reappears hours later, as if the sea itself is playing tricks.

Day 3 · Where Gods Once Walked
If there is one place in Japan that feels truly sacred, it is Takachiho Gorge.
Sheer basalt cliffs rise 80 meters above a narrow river, draped in moss and ferns. A waterfall plunges into the emerald water below. You board a small wooden rowboat and drift through this otherworldly canyon in near-silence, the only sounds being the splash of your oars and the distant rush of the falls.
According to Japanese mythology, this is where Amaterasu, the sun goddess, hid in a cave and plunged the world into darkness. Standing here, surrounded by such primordial beauty, the legend feels less like myth and more like memory.
From Takachiho, the road winds through the mountains to Yufuin — a charming hot spring town nestled at the foot of the twin-peaked Mount Yufu. Browse the quaint shops along Yunotsubo Street, then continue to Beppu for the evening.
No visit to Beppu is complete without seeing the Jigoku — the “Hells” — a collection of spectacular hot springs too hot for bathing but breathtaking to behold. Umi Jigoku, the Sea Hell, lives up to its name: a pool of impossibly vivid cobalt blue, steaming gently in the cooling air.

Day 4 · Coastal Beauty & Farewell
Your final morning takes you to Itoshima, a stretch of coastline west of Fukuoka that feels like it belongs on a postcard. White sand beaches, dramatic rock formations, and a collection of beachside cafés make it the perfect place for a leisurely goodbye to Kyushu.
Return to Fukuoka for some last-minute exploring or shopping in Tenjin, then head to the airport.
Four days. One volcanic crater, one pod of dolphins, one sacred gorge, one legendary onsen town, and a thousand moments you’ll carry with you long after you’ve landed back home.
